A PERSON OF SUBSTANCE

A steady rise of Nadda

from Shimla

Jagat Prakash Nadda From a student leader to the working president of the BJP the political career of Jagat Prakash Nadda has seen a steady rise over the past four decades. He is the first leader from the small hill state of Himachal Pradesh to take over the reins of a mainstream national party.
Nadda’s elevation to the top organisational position was expected after Amit Shah took oath as the Home Minister and he was left out from the Modi’s Cabinet. His performance as the Lok Sabha poll in-charge of Uttar Pradesh, where the NDA won 64 out of the total 80 seats, had only strengthened his claim. The conclusion of Anuraag Thakur in the ministry made it apparent that the party had bigger plans for Nadda.

In fact, Nadda’s name was among the front runners for the national BJP chief soon after the party came to power in 2014.However, the party high command opted for Shah in view of his organisational and election management skills and Nadda was included as health minister in the union cabinet.

An affable but astute leader with good oratorical skills Nadda has always maintained a low profile and discharged whatever responsibilities were assigned to him with diligence and commitment. He doesn’t believe in pursuing the politics of confrontation and factionalism and has the knack of carrying along everyone. These traits have earned him the respect of his political opponents.

He doesn’t believe in pursuing the politics of confrontation and factionalism and has the knack of carrying along everyone. These traits have earned him the respect of his political opponents.

Nadda with CM Jairam Thakur The 58-year-old leader from Bilaspur district started his political career as an ABVP activist and held several important posts, including general secretary of the Himachal BJP, leader of BJP legislative party in state assembly and president of BJYM. He was thrice elected as MLA, served as minister for two terms and twice got elected to Rajya Sabha from the state.
He provided ample evidence of his organisational and managerial skills as a student leader and remained the national general secretary of the ABVP from 1986 to 1989.However, it was his performance as the in charge of the politically important Kangra region from 1988 to 1991 which brought him to limelight in the BJP. He was soon elevated as national president of BJYM when Murali Manohar Joshi headed the BJP.
He entered electoral politics in 1993 and became the leader of the BJP legislative group in the Vidhan Sabha, despite being a first-timer.He served as health minister in the P.K.Dhumal-led BJP-HVC coalition from 1998 to 2003 and became the forest minster when the BJP regained power in the state in 2007.

His differences with Dhumal proved a blessing in disguise as he decided to quit as forest minster in 2010 and shifted to national politics when the then national BJP chief Nitin Gadkari appointed him as general secretary of the party. The organisational responsibility paved way for his election to Rajya Sabha in 2012. He was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2018.

The new assignment is challenging one. He has acquired enough experience to discharge the responsibility working in close coordination with association stalwarts like Narendra Modi, Murali Manohar Joshi, Amit Shah and Nitin Gadkari.

He was a strong contender for the post of chief minister but the high command declared Dhumal as the leader during run up to the assembly elections in 2017. He was not made the chief minster even after Dhumal lost the assembly election and instead Jai Ram Thakur was given the coveted post.

It was obvious that the high command was not keen on sending him back to the state and wanted him to work at the centre. He enjoyed considerable clout as a central leader being a member of parliamentary board, central election committee and other important decision-making bodies of the party. His elevation is just another step up in his career graph which has been moving northwards.

The BJP leader got exposed to student politics in his formative years as a young boy inPatna, where his father was serving as the vicechancellor of the Patna University. The Sampurna Kranti movement of Jai Prakash Narayan was at its peak and it left an imprint on his mind. He was joined the ABVP and won election as Secretary, Patna university students union in 1977.He continued his innings as student leader after he shifted to Himachal and laid foundation of the ABVP while pursuing his Bachelor of Law degree from the Himachal Pradesh University where leftists called the shots.ABVP won for the first time in the student union elections in 1984 under his leadership and he rose to become the national general secretary of the organisation.

The new assignment is challenging one but he has acquired enough experience to discharge the responsibility working in close coordination with association stalwarts like Narendra Modi, Murali Manohar Joshi, Amit Shah and Nitin Gadkari.
