PUNJAB ELECTION

AAP may play spoil

V.P. Prabhakar

Arvind Kejriwal The Aam Aadmi Party, which has fielded candidates in all the 117 seats in the Punjab Assembly elections, may play a spoil game, as a result of which the situation in the state may become fluid.
Encouraged by its only success in the Lok Sabha elections by winning four seats form Punjab, its leader, Arvind Kejriwal, has jumped in the Punjab fray with all vigour. The AAP, the Akali-BJP alliance and the Congress are in all constituencies.
The campaign by all parties is in full swing these days. The Congress has launched campaign against the recent denominations.
The Election Commission (EC) has roped in comedian Kapil Sharma, besides rapper Dr Zeus and Punjabi actor and comedian Binoo Dhillon, to motivate voters to cast their votes in the Assembly elections.
The Congress, under its scheme "Har Ghar Captain, Har Ghar Naukri", is continuing with the registration of unemployed youths and even issuing them "allowance cards" promising Rs. 2500 per month.
The Election Commission (ECI) has cautioned the candidates and political parties to utilize the broadcast channels or newspapers owned by them properly.
The ECI has made it clear that any political party or a candidate promoting his own poll campaign on a self owned broadcast channel or newspaper would incur expenses as per the standard rate card of the said channel or newspaper. It said that in case the cost of telecast crosses the poll expenditure limit (of Rs. 28lakhs) the candidates could face disqualification.
In a major shake-up in Punjab Police, the election Commission has removed as many as 10 Senior Superintendents of Police, three Inspector General and one Commissioner of Police, replacing them with new officers.
