AVIATION NOTE

Matter of concern

Miscommunication between Air Traffic Control (ATC) and Indigo captain was a cause of confusion, which could have had led to a mishap. The flight had 174 passengers, including Bengal chief minster, Mamata Banerjee.
Some years ago, there was a lack of communication between ATC and Air India and flight crashed. The sad chapter is that there is an acute shortage of staff at ATC, although many of them are highly competent and devoted to the cause of the aviation.

Mamata Banerjee Actually, there was no shortage of fuel. The problem multiplied as main runway is closed for re-carpeting and the secondary runway is too small to handle multiple flights. According to reports, the ATC stuck in queue with Air India landing first, Spicejet second and Indigo third.

Ashok Gajapati Raju The cry was raised in Parliament as Banerjee was on board the flight. The TMC accused the government for endangering the life of Bengal chief minister. The Civil Aviation Minister, Ashok Gajapati Raju has already ordered for the probe.

Jungleraj indeed !

Satendra Singh The disabled persons—some of them scholarly and respected citizens of the country- -- are suffering harassment and humiliation owing to dubious role of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). It directs the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to show 'respectability' to the people with disabilities persons but write a secret letter saying that they should be frisked as other passengers.
More than two years ago in 2014, Dr Satendra Singh, a disability rights activist, wrote a letter to the RTI demanding status of the disabled persons at Indian airports. For two years, the RTI and BCAS kept denying the information. When Dr Singh put pressure on these organisations, the activist was handed over a letter.
It said: "Persons with disabilities (PwD) are not exempt from normal security procedures.
The screeners should be thorough as PoWs could be secretly carrying prohibitive material ". The letter also said: "The chances of PoW carrying weapons are higher than normal persons. The PoWs need to be frisked with thoroughness".
The reality thus far is that there is no instance of a PoW or PoWs have ever been guilty of acting wrongly. This is a mere figment of imagination of BCAS. The painful truth is that worldwide,PoWs are handled with care and respect unlike Indian airports where 'jungle raj exists.
The menace will end only when full scan becomes a reality at Indian airports. Until this happens, the aviation ministry should issue new guidelines so that respected 'PoWs' are not treated shabbiy.
It was ATC again in Mumbai when there was wing tip collision between Indigo and Kuwait airways. The ATC was taken off duty pending completion of inquiry, according to the Aiports Authority of India (AAI).
