Diplomacy under Trump

MR Dua

Donald J. Trump One wonders what would be W a s h i n g t o n ' s diplomacy under new American President Donald J. Trump The president-elect, Trump, has missed no chance to come down ruthlessly on the trade deals signed
during the Obama administration and vowed to repeal the prestigious Obama's signature healthcare law that benefited nearly 25 million poor and middle class Americans. Trump has repeatedly reverberated and upheld his resolve to build a wall: "We're going build a wall.I'm going to build a wall. We're going to have strong borders,' to eliminate illegal immigrants" flow from Mexico or elsewhere into 'our country.'
Trump has also assured American of arriving at some kind of de'tente with Russia and sort out the Syrian imbroglio to stop the streams of refugees fleeing to Europe and elsewhere.
It may be recalled that during a poll campaign meeting organized by the Republican Hindu Coalition in October last, Trump had assured the Indian-American community in Edison city of New Jersey state he'll be a 'true friend of the community', praised

Barack H. Obama and Vladimir Putin Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a 'pro-growth leader' with whom he'll like to work,' and added, 'I'm a big fan of Hindus, and a big fan of India—big, big fan. Let me start by saying right up front that if elected president, the Indian and Hindu community will have a true friend in the White House. That I can guarantee you.'
Elaborating, Trump went on: 'India

Narendra Modi Is the world's largest democracy. And it's a naturally ally of the US… I look forward to working with Prime Minister Modi, a pro-growth leader. India's economy is growing seven per cent a year, and we're not growing at all.
Paradoxically, Trump has already threatened to curtail the H1-B visa from the annual present intake of 85,000, and making it prohibitively expensive. It's an amazing U-turn in his solemn promise to the Indians. That Trump will forget what he promised just three months ago, reneging so soon has already caused unlimited tremors among Indian-Americans working in the Indian IT companies such as Wipro, TCS, Infosys, and others.

Nikki Haley However, there's some consolation. Trump has recognized and rewarded some eminently talented Indian- Americans, such as Nikki Haley (aka Ms. Nimarta Randhawa Haley), twoterm governor of South Carolina, by appointing her as permanent US representative in UN, and inviting Ms. Indra Nooyi, Pepsi Co CEO, to the Strategic and Policy Forum to implement the presidential economic agenda. Indra Nooyi is the only Indian

Indra Nooyi Indianorigin executive in the 19-member Forum Since Trump's also besieged by his protectionist promise of bringing jobs back, he'll have to follow the 'hire American, buy American' policy; also 'we love our companies, but don't love them when they go out of our country.' Trump has still to announce many more appointment in the days to come, and may invite more people of the Indian origin in his administration.
